Missing – Questions on Rhetoric and Style – The Bird and the Machine

1. The effect of presenting imagery before exposition has, is the fact that it makes a more clear presentation of his idea to the audience, giving it more meaning.  It emphasizes the imagery to make it easier to understand.

 2.  In paragraph four he compares machines to the human body, saying it is all joints and pulleys.  This is an example of an odd juxtaposition.

3.  All these phrases are, unsure, for lack of a better word.  Things like “I guess” and “I don’t deny” are all somewhat hesitant but at the same time accepting.  He knows technology is advancing, but is not sure he supports the change of humanity and nature.

4. By directly addressing the audience in paragraph 4, he changes gears into a more personal essay.  By directly speaking to them the audience understands that everyone is affected, and makes them included.

5. The cause and effect pattern the he uses is effective, and does the article good.  There are, of course, other patterns he could have used, but this certain one makes his idea clear, and understandable.

6. The verbs in paragraph 20 show what is going on.  The description is detailed and he made sure the audience understood what he was doing, and what was happening.

7. The ironic portion of this essay was how he talked of the big clear sky and nature and how it is wonderful, but he himself has a bird caged in a box.

8.  Changing from present to past show the audience that time progresses, and everything ties together in the end.

9. These three rhetorical styles create a bridge by showing ethos as machines that have been put together, logos to show the logic of science and humanity and pathos to make it personal to humans (the audience).
