In the beginning, the essay was rather confusing,  but by the end, I understood most of it.  Giovanni was using her imagination to write the things she felt would make the story better and/or more interesting. She uses symbolism in the elephants at the beginning of the story to fore-shadow Harry’s life, as well as going into Harry’s future to show where he would be, making a perfect setup for a flashback.
