Honestly, I don’t think I agree with her argument; I feel it is very well researched, but easily contradicted.  I see it like this: if Americans are getting dumber, then why, over the years, has it become harder and harder to get into a decent college?  It’s nearly impossible to get into Ivy Leagues, simply because there is such fierce competition.  The competition is coming from other Americans, which must mean our culture is getting dumber (sarcasm)!  Of course, there are the high percentages of people who don’t read books, but honestly, if you have a good job, or skills that earn you money, which don’t require reading novel after novel, then why would it be necessary?  I know that, as far as I’m concerned, I do not enjoy reading and only do it when assigned.  I don’t feel like I’m letting down my country by skipping out on leisure reads, or dumbing down the status of America.  I’m just not forcing myself to do something that I don’t particularly enjoy.
